Soccer Player – Diego Esquivel McGann

Nightlenses changed my life | Diego Esquivel McGann | Soccer Player

In this exclusive chat with nightlenses.com, we catch up with Diego Esquivel McGann, a talented soccer player whose life took a turn for the better after switching to night lenses to up his game and performance.

Q: Well, that’s quite a name you’ve got! Where’s it from?
A: I’m half Irish, half Costa Rican, but I grew up in Costa Rica. My dad’s Costa Rican, and my mom hails from Northern Ireland. We moved back to Northern Ireland because there are better opportunities here than in Costa Rica.

Q: How old are you?
A: I’m 17, and I’m trying to make my way to England to chase my dream of becoming a pro soccer player.

Q: During lockdown, you noticed your eyesight wasn’t top-notch for Zoom calls. What did you do?
A: Spending a lot of time glued to a screen and not enough outdoors gazing into the distance messed up my eyesight. We went to the eye doctor to figure out what was wrong, and that’s when I found out I had nearsightedness.

Q: You started with soft contact lenses; how did they work out for soccer?
A: They were alright for everyday stuff, but when it came to sports, especially soccer, they were a real pain. They’d sometimes shift out of place or get messed up by sweat and dust, making it hard to see. Sometimes, they’d even bail on me during a game, leaving me with “half and half” vision – one eye right, the other wrong. I asked the eye doc what to do if one popped out during a match, and she said to leave it, as a lens that touched the ground couldn’t go back in my eye. Plus, finding it on the ground was almost impossible!

Q: Did you ever have to play with just one lens in?
A: There were quite a few matches where a lens would decide to make an exit. When it rained, they’d almost always take a hike, messing with my game and annoying me.

Q: Did these day lens issues mess with your focus during the game?
A: Oh, absolutely. Mid-game, I’d get all jittery, thinking, “this lens is going to jump ship!” instead of concentrating on the game and doing my thing.

Q: What’s the main difference between night lenses and day lenses for you as a soccer player?
A: I’d say it’s the freedom of not having to worry about day lenses jumping ship and knowing you’re good to go for the day. Night lenses give you crystal-clear vision and have made a massive difference. I haven’t given lenses a second thought during a game in a long time. It’s been really, really great.

Q: Would you ever switch back to day lenses?
A: No chance. I’d never go back. Too much hassle for something that barely does its job. Even if it stayed in, it’d move around a lot. Quick head movements would knock it loose, and it wasn’t pleasant.

Q: Would you find it weird if a pro athlete picked day lenses over night lenses?
A: Absolutely. Night lenses have so many perks, and day lenses have so many downsides. They seriously impact your performance in a big way.

Q: Some folks who haven’t heard about night lenses might be skeptical. What would you tell them?
A: No tricks here. It genuinely leaves you feeling refreshed – waking up with perfect vision and no issues throughout the day. It’s like hitting the reset button on your eyes every day, which is amazing. Not having to mess with anything during the day to fix my vision feels fantastic! I’d definitely recommend them to any athlete out there!
