Euan Speirits – Surgeon

NIGHT LENSES TRANSFORMED MY LIFE | Euan Speirits

Dr. Euan Speirits is a respected Scottish surgeon who specializes in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Biomechanical Research. He’s not just a top-notch medical professional; he’s also a seriously talented athlete. He excels in mountain biking, tennis, and basketball. We had a chance to chat with him over Zoom to find out how night lenses have made a big difference in his busy life.

Q: Hi Dr. Euan! We can tell you’re pretty amazing at what you do, both in medicine and sports. Is it all about pushing your limits for you?

A: I reckon people can be great at what they love. I’ve got a passion for lots of things. I’ve been into sports and academics from a young age. Juggling my work and personal interests is a big part of my life. Some folks stick to one thing, but I’ve always believed in the saying, “The world was invented by someone no smarter than you.” So, I aim for excellence in surgery and sports.

Q: How long have you been using night lenses, and why did you start?

A: It’s been about 3 to 4 years now. A buddy of mine, Scott Brown, who’s an optician and also into mountain biking, introduced me to night lenses. Back then, I was using monthly lenses. The problem with those and mountain biking was they’d dry up, especially when they got muddy. Even daily lenses weren’t much better, as they’d dry out too. When I was doing surgery, the bright lights would dry out my eyes. Funny thing is, even though I’m in the medical field and into sports, I’d never heard of night lenses before. I’d thought about getting laser eye surgery, but I worried about the cost and it being permanent. Night lenses seemed like a good middle ground.

Q: How have night lenses helped with your sports activities?

A: They’ve been a game-changer. I can compete all day without worrying about my eyes drying out, and everyday life is simpler without the constant hassles of dry contacts or losing them while out paddleboarding. Night lenses have made everything feel more normal.

Q: Do they also help with your work as a surgeon?

A: Absolutely. I can focus on my work without concerns about dry eyes or discomfort. In surgery, under bright lights and high pressure, my eyes used to get dry. Even during long shifts, a few hours of wearing night lenses keeps my vision sharp. Putting them in and taking them out is easy, even during quick breaks.

Q: So, would you say night lenses have really changed your life?

A: They’ve given me freedom. I don’t have to constantly think about my contacts or glasses anymore. I’m always outdoors, by the beach, lake, or ocean, and I don’t have to worry about clear vision or water activities. I only need to think about my eyes right before bedtime and when I wake up.

Q: Would you ever go back to regular daytime lenses?

A: Not a chance. There was one week when I forgot my night lenses, and it was a nightmare! All the things I disliked about daytime lenses came flooding back – the dryness, the need to track wear time, and the worry about keeping them safe during mountain biking. I was so relieved when I had my night lenses again.

Q: To wrap up – would you recommend night lenses to other athletes, pros, or amateurs?

A: I’d recommend them without hesitation. Anyone who’s worn daytime lenses knows the discomfort of them shifting around. Not having to deal with that in high-performance sports is a game-changer. Your vision matches what you see, no compromises. I’m surprised more people haven’t tried them, mainly because they don’t know about them.

Q: Could night lenses revolutionize sports for glasses and daytime lens wearers?

A: No doubt about it. They will definitely change the game for glasses and daytime lens wearers lucky enough to use them. When people find out how night lenses have transformed my athletic life, they quickly see the benefits of competing without contacts or glasses. The main issue is that they sound “too good to be true” and people have some misconceptions. The concept is based on orthokeratology, a natural process. Your cornea naturally sheds its outer cells every night, and that’s what reshapes it into the lens form as you sleep, giving you perfect vision. It’s as thin as a single cell layer. It’s simple! The process naturally reverts over 24 hours, and you just repeat it. People should look into it. Honestly, my life wouldn’t be where it is if I’d stuck with regular contacts. The freedom of night lenses is what’s enabled my major achievements in mountain biking. Trust me, look into them!
