Night lenses chat | Catherine, 46 – I wish I knew about them earlier

In our segment titled “I wish I’d known about night lenses years ago!” we had a Zoom chat with Catherine, who indeed wished she had discovered night lenses earlier! Catherine recently switched from glasses and contact lenses to night lenses. You can watch her interview online HERE (apologies for the poor quality; there was a storm outside, and the Wi-Fi was struggling!) or read the interview below:

Q. Catherine, what impact have night lenses had on your life? Why do you adore them?

Oh my goodness, it’s all about the little things in daily life. I used to wear glasses every single day, especially in the last year, especially for seeing things at a distance. I got so tired of coming home from shopping in the rain with glasses on, a mask on, and my face and glasses all fogged up. The past few years with glasses have been a nightmare! I tried contact lenses – dailies, monthlies – but they just never seemed to work for me. Later on, I found out I have dry eyes. I tried different brands, but they made my eyes red, and after a while, I had to take them out because they irritated my eyes. I couldn’t wear them all day.

Q. So, those problems are all in the past now?

Yes, completely gone! For me, inserting these little lenses at night is a breeze. I just put them in before I go to sleep, ‘pop,’ ‘pop,’ that’s it, off to sleep. While you’re fast asleep, you don’t even realize you’re wearing anything. When I wake up, I take them out, and I have perfect vision! I can’t believe that I can see everything so clearly! My optometrist even says I have better than 20/20 vision. It’s amazing!

Q. In the past, you’d wake up without your glasses, so you’d have to search for your glasses and lenses to see. But now, you wake up, look outside, and see the birds…?

Exactly! You know, the first night I put in my lenses, it was so thrilling, like Christmas. When I got up in the morning, I could see with the lenses in, but I didn’t want to look outside the window just yet. I took the lenses out, which only took a couple of minutes, then went to the window – because that’s what you do when you wake up in the morning – previously, it would always have been a blur, or I’d have had to find my glasses – and I was just amazed. I could see everything! The birds, the garden, everything was crystal clear!

Q. I can see you’re passionate about your fashion, and you’re rocking that leopard print – so how has your fashion changed now?

I used to feel miserable because I had to wear my glasses every single day. So, when I went out at night, my glasses didn’t complement the outfit I was wearing. Now, I can go out without glasses, and I don’t have contact lenses that irritate my eyes or make them red… that’s awesome. I can wear hats again! You don’t think about it, but many hats don’t go well with glasses – so now, I can just put on anything, and I don’t have to worry if it looks right with my glasses or not. It’s a truly amazing feeling.

Q. We spoke to someone recently who said, “I can wear whatever sunglasses I like!”

That’s another great thing – I have lots of funky-looking shades. They’re not prescription, and now I can wear them – in the car when I’m driving or whenever we’ve had a lot of sunshine.

Q. I know you enjoy gardening. Do night lenses help with that?
Gardening is a big deal! When you wear glasses, you bend down a lot, and your glasses inevitably slip down your face… then I get mud on my hand, so I have to use my elbow to push them back up, they get in the way, and eventually, I take my glasses off… but then, I can’t see anything in the distance… so I have to put them back on! So just being free and not having to touch your face is fantastic.

Q. So, night lenses have truly been a game-changer for you. The biggest issue is that people don’t believe these things are real, and they’ve never heard of them, which is why we run these awareness campaigns with real people who use them – what would you say to your former self two years ago or to others watching this and thinking, “Really… is this real?” Are these real?

They’re like magic! They really are. I tell all my friends and family about them – you just insert them, so easy before going to sleep… once they’re in, you’re not even aware of them because you’re fast asleep anyway, so you’re not thinking about having anything in your eyes… and when you wake up, you remove them… and your vision is completely corrected… it’s amazing… it’s like magic!

Q. To state the obvious – you would recommend night lenses?

Absolutely! Like you said in the title – “I wish I knew about these years ago!” I’ve been wearing glasses since my 20s, and if only I could have done this back then, I wouldn’t have had all the little day-to-day hassles from wearing glasses or dealing with irritated eyes from daily contact lenses… it’s just mind-blowing!

Thank you, Catherine!
