Soccer Player – Diego Esquivel McGann

Nightlenses changed my life | Diego Esquivel McGann | Soccer Player

In this exclusive conversation with nightlenses.com, we sit down with Diego Esquivel McGann, a talented soccer player whose life took a positive turn after making the switch to night lenses to elevate his game and performance.

So, that’s quite a name you have there! Where does it come from?
I’m half Irish, half Costa Rican, but I was raised in Costa Rica. My dad is Costa Rican, and my mom is from Northern Ireland. We moved back to Northern Ireland because the opportunities here are better than in Costa Rica.

How old are you?
I’m 17 and trying to make my way to England to pursue professional soccer.

During lockdown, you noticed that your eyesight wasn’t the best during Zoom calls. What did you do?
Spending a lot of time close to a screen and not much time outdoors looking far away caused issues for my eyesight. We went to the eye doctor to see what was wrong, and that’s where I found out I had nearsightedness.

You started with soft contact lenses; how did they work with soccer?
They were okay for daily stuff, but during sports, especially soccer, they were really uncomfortable. They’d sometimes move out of place or get affected by sweat and dust, making it tough to see. Sometimes they’d even fall out during a game, leaving me with “half and half” vision – one eye right and the other wrong. I asked the eye doctor what to do if one fell out during a game, and she said to leave it, as a lens that touched the ground couldn’t go back in my eye. Plus, finding it on the ground was practically impossible!

Did you have any problems where you had to play with only one lens in?
There were quite a few matches where a lens would pop out. When it was raining, they’d almost always come out, messing with my performance and bothering me.

Would these day lens problems effect your concentration on the game?
Yes, I would get anxious mid-game thinking: β€œthis lens is going to fall out!”, instead of concentrating on the game and doing what I’m supposed to do.

What’s the main difference between night lenses and day lenses for you as a soccer player?
Probably the freedom of not worrying about day lenses falling out and knowing you’re all set for the day. Night lenses give you clear vision and have made a huge difference. I haven’t thought about lenses mid-game in a long time. It’s been really, really good.

Would you ever switch back to day lenses?
No way, I’d never go back. Too much hassle for something that barely does its job. Even if it stayed in, it would move around a lot. Quick head movements made it come off, and it wasn’t pleasant.

Would you find it strange if a pro athlete chose day lenses over night lenses?
Definitely. Night lenses have so many benefits and day lenses have so many drawbacks. They really affect your performance in a big way.

Some folks who haven’t heard about night lenses might be doubtful. What would you tell them?
No gimmicks here. It genuinely leaves you feeling refreshed – waking up with perfect vision and no issues throughout the day. It’s like resetting your eyes every day, which is awesome. Not having to use anything during the day to fix my vision feels amazing! I’d definitely recommend them to any athlete out there!
