Night lenses changed my life | Mary Anthony

Meet Mary Anthony, a mum of teenage footballers (you know, one of those sideline footy mums who point and shout), a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) enthusiast (into Les Mills Grit Cardio, Body Combat, etc., for those in the know), and a night lens wearer. We hopped onto Zoom to have a chat about how night lenses have transformed her life…

Q: Hi Mary, so how long have you been using night lenses?

A: Gosh, it’s been about 4 years now! Time flies…

Q: How did you start using them?

A: I used to wear glasses because I had nearsightedness. But I’m quite active, doing lots of fitness, driving, and watching my boys play football, and glasses just didn’t cut it for me. During my workouts, they’d bounce around, and sweat would slide them down my face. After a long work session with glasses on, driving afterwards was uncomfortable for my ears. When it came to watching my boys play football, well, living in Scotland, you can imagine with the rain, I was constantly taking them off to dry them. It was a hassle. When I learned about night lenses versus day lenses, it was a no-brainer – everything happens while I sleep, nothing to worry about. It’s fantastic!

Q: You mentioned your fitness routine. What activities do you do, and how have night lenses made a difference?

A: I engage in High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Les Mills, and Grit Cardio, where you push yourself to the max for 30 minutes doing burpees, high knees, and running in place. My heart rate shoots up to 198, so you can imagine how glasses would fog up and slip off my face with all that sweat. A few years ago, I used to do Sprint classes on bikes, which required me to look at a big screen, so I’d need my glasses. Nowadays, many workouts involve screens. HIIT is definitely a challenge with glasses, and looking back, I think if I hadn’t switched to night lenses, I would have done less of it.

Q: So, it’s safe to say night lenses have genuinely transformed your life?

A: Absolutely, it’s like night and day. They are fantastic, and I think everyone should consider them. I wake up in the morning, can see clearly, and don’t have to rely on anything. No bouncing around on my face, no squinting to focus, no worrying about placing glasses down at the gym and fearing they’d get stepped on. As I mentioned with my HIIT, which I’m really passionate about, my world has expanded over the past few years because glasses were no longer holding me back.

Q: Would you ever go back to wearing glasses?

A: No way – absolutely not! I pop them in at night, don’t have to fuss over them, my vision is spot-on all day, and I can easily spot which boy is my son on the football field! I can’t emphasize enough how much it has improved my life as a football mum in rainy Scotland. Wind and rain used to make my life miserable with rain-splattered glasses I couldn’t see through. Now, I just stand there like normal. Plus, I’m so accustomed to the routine now, it’s second nature.

Q: I have a hunch about the answer to this question – would you recommend night lenses to others?

A: Without a doubt, 100%. Once you start wearing them, you’ll wonder why you ever wore anything else.

[Editor: After all that HIIT talk, I’m feeling absolutely knackered and decidedly out of shape! 😄]
