Night lenses changed my life | Finlay 12 and mum Lyn

In this chat from nightlenses.com, we’re talking to Finlay and his mum, Lyn, about why it’s a great idea to start using night lenses early for kids with nearsightedness. It’s all about giving them freedom from glasses and keeping their eyes in check.

So, Finlay, how did you end up using night lenses?
MUM: Finlay’s eyesight took a nosedive when he was 10, so I took him to the eye doctor. At our first visit, the doc told us about night lenses. They said kids who wore them had awesome results in controlling their nearsightedness. Since I wear glasses too and didn’t want Finlay to end up like me with a -8 prescription, we decided to give it a shot.

Finlay, did you ever like wearing glasses?
FINLAY: Glasses helped me see better, but they weren’t great for my sports like trampolining and biking. They’d slip off when I jumped around!

How’s it been putting in the night lenses?
FINLAY: It took some getting used to, but now I pop them in on the first try. I walk to my desk, sit down, put ’em in, then head to bed.

You’re into mountain biking, right? Can you imagine doing that with glasses?
FINLAY: Mountain biking is my jam! Glasses would be a hassle, especially with goggles going downhill. Thanks to night lenses, I can see clearly without glasses!
MUM: There was a time when he wore glasses and they’d fog up or get all muddy and wet. Cleaning them with bike gloves was a no-go since it scratched ’em. Glasses just didn’t cut it.

Do the night lenses make you forget about any eyesight issues?
FINLAY: Totally! I don’t even think about them since I only wear ’em at night. I feel normal, like I don’t need anything to see better.

Have the night lenses helped control your nearsightedness?
MUM: Absolutely! Finlay’s been using night lenses for 2 years now. At his first yearly check, his eyesight had actually improved! His recent check showed that it’s staying steady. It’s surprising because his eyes kept getting worse, so it’s awesome to see no more deterioration.

What would you say to other parents about night lenses?
MUM: I’d say they’re a gamechanger. A great investment in your kid’s eyesight. They’ve made Finlay’s life easier, especially with sports and hobbies. Plus, the long-term benefit is less or no more worsening eyesight. They’re easy to use, and Finlay gets a night off from them each week.

Did you worry about Finlay handling the lenses?
MUM: Since I’ve worn lenses, I wasn’t too worried about Finlay having them. But it was weird thinking he’d sleep with them overnight, as I was always told not to with day lenses! Once we learned it’s fine with night lenses, the main thing was teaching Finlay to handle them himself. It wasn’t easy at first, but once he got the hang of it, it became routine. I’d recommend them 100%!

So, Finlay, would you recommend night lenses?
FINLAY: Yep! They’re practical and they work.

What would you tell kids your age who think night lenses are tricky?
FINLAY: Once you get used to them, they’re a breeze!
MUM: It took some effort in the first few weeks since Finlay has sensitive eyes. He’s not someone who can just pop them in and feel comfy right away. But after a few minutes, he’s good to go. He realized the benefits outweigh any hassle. He’s glad he stuck with it.
FINLAY: … and taking them out is a piece of cake, really easy!
