Night lenses changed my life | Oisin McVeigh
Q: Osh, can you share what it was like on the first day without anything in your eyes?
A: It was pretty wild. I could spot a bottle of shampoo clear across the room without needing glasses! It was weird but in a cool way.
Q: How has life changed for you without glasses?
A: Life’s a whole lot easier without glasses. No more fuss about them slipping or breaking. And with masks and all due to Covid, not having them around has been super convenient.
Q: As a rugby player, how has your experience changed, and how do you think it’ll change in the future?
A: All sports are a breeze now. In rugby, I need good vision to track the action. It was tough when I couldn’t spot players or see the whole field. Clear vision is a game-changer for sure. Lenses or sports glasses were a hassle, like losing a lens mid-match or getting them all grimy. Night lenses totally nail it.
Q: How was the switch to using night lenses, popping them in and out?
A: It was cool. New stuff’s always a bit tricky at first, but it got easy fast. I thought it’d be a mission, but it’s pretty straightforward. Now, I do it without even thinking.
Q: What did your buddies think? Did they notice your glasses were history?
A: Yeah, most didn’t even realize I was sans glasses! They find it kinda weird, hard to grasp. But a few school pals and teammates are actually curious about it now.
Q: I heard you’re into rowing too. Have night lenses helped there?
A: I’m all about coastal rowing with big skiffs. While rowing itself wasn’t super affected by my eyesight, it’s way better to see everything around me now.
Q: Would you tell other rugby players, sports nuts, and teens your age to try night lenses?
A: Absolutely, I’d totally tell my buds to give these lenses a go. They’ve seriously amped up my life!

Q: So, mom, how did Osh end up with night lenses?
A: Osh is this rugby whiz, but he wasn’t big on wearing glasses or lenses on the field. It was odd how he was playing without good vision. We knew he needed something to up his game. But lenses during sports? He wasn’t a fan—worried about losing them or getting them mucked up. Sports glasses? Nah. We stumbled upon night lenses, and the idea of a lens changing sight overnight seemed nuts. But we dug in, gave it a shot, and look where we are now!
Q: Night lenses can be a bit puzzling. How did family and friends react?
A: Funny story here! Osh got his lenses on April 1st. I texted my sisters, all with sight issues, about these lenses he pops in at night and wakes up seeing great… They thought it was April Fool’s and didn’t reply. Once they knew it was real, they were amazed.
Q: Why was getting Osh night lenses important for you as a parent?
A: Two big things for me. One, locking down his eyesight. I’m -13 myself, so I know how it can mess with life. Goggles didn’t cut it for me—had to quit swimming and water sports. I wanted Osh to have choices and doors open. Night lenses changed the game, letting him keep doing what he loves, no bad vision, day lenses, or glasses holding him back. It’s the best gift for his rugby and beyond.
[Editor’s note – Osh was a true gent, clear and awesome – you’ve given him more than just sight, Grainne!]
We asked Osh to do a selfie vid to tell you about his experiences in his own words. Filmed by his mum and with his puppy in support – over to you Osh…
