Night lenses changed my life | Finlay 12 and mum Lyn

In this conversation on nightlenses.com, we sit down with Finlay and his mom, Lyn, to dive into the advantages of beginning myopic children on night lenses early. It’s all about embracing the perks of liberation from glasses and taking charge of myopia.

How did Finlay start using night lenses?
MUM: Finlay’s eyesight took a real hit when he was 10, so I brought him to the optometrist. It was during our initial visit with the optometrist that we first heard about night lenses. They shared that kids they had fit with night lenses had experienced impressive success in controlling myopia. Being nearsighted myself, I was really keen on preventing Finlay from ending up with a prescription like mine (-8).

Did you enjoy wearing glasses before, Finlay?
FINLAY: They did improve my vision, but they were not practical for my sports like trampolining and biking. They would slip off when I jumped too much!

How did you adjust to putting in the lenses?
FINLAY: It took some getting used to, but now I get them in on the first try. I walk over to my desk, sit down, pop them in, head over to my bed, and sleep.

How much do you enjoy mountain biking? Could you imagine doing that with glasses?
FINLAY: It’s definitely my favorite sport. It would be pretty awkward, especially wearing goggles downhill. But now, since I use night lenses, I can see without needing glasses!
MUM: There was a time when he wore glasses and they would fog up, get muddy or wet, and it was a bit of a hassle. You couldn’t just wipe off the mud with your mountain bike gloves as it would scratch them. So glasses weren’t really practical overall.

Do night lenses make you feel like you have no vision issues at all?
FINLAY: Yeah! I just forget about the night lenses since I’m only using them at night. I feel normal, like I don’t need anything to see better.

Have night lenses helped with controlling myopia?
MUM: Absolutely! Finlay has been wearing night lenses for 2 years now. At his first annual check-up, his eyesight had actually improved! He recently had his second check-up and his eyesight remained stable. It’s quite surprising considering he used to have constant deterioration, so it’s great to see no current worsening of Finlay’s eyesight.

What advice would you give to other parents about night lenses?
MUM: I’d tell them that it’s a total gamechanger. I believe it’s a worthwhile investment in your child’s eyesight. It’s made Finlay’s life much easier and, as we mentioned earlier, for sports and hobbies, he can do them without any hassle or concerns about wearing glasses. The long-term benefit is that there’s minimal to no further deterioration in his eyesight. They’re so user-friendly, and Finlay also gets a night off from them each week.

Were you worried about Finlay’s ability to handle the lenses?
MUM: Having worn lenses myself, I wasn’t worried about Finlay using them. It was a bit odd to think he’d be wearing them overnight, as I’ve always been told not to sleep with my daily lenses in! But once you’re assured it’s fine with night lenses, the main thing was teaching Finlay how to put them in and take them out himself. I must admit, it wasn’t easy at the start, as it takes a while to adjust, but once you’re used to it: you pop them in, wear them overnight, and wake up to perfect vision. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone!

So, Finlay, would you suggest night lenses?
FINLAY: Yeah! They’re practical and effective.

If other kids your age are worried about using night lenses, what would you tell them?
FINLAY: Once you get used to them, night lenses are a breeze!
MUM: It took a bit of effort in the first few weeks, especially since Finlay has sensitive eyes. He’s not the type who can just pop them in and feel comfortable right away. But give him a few minutes and he’s fine, as he gets more comfortable and realizes that the benefits outweigh any inconvenience. He’s more than happy he stuck with it.
FINLAY: …and taking them out is easy, really easy!
