Night lenses changed my life | Finlay 12 and mum Lyn

In this nightlenses.com chat, we have a conversation with Finlay and his mum Lyn about the advantages of starting myopic children early with night lenses to achieve the benefits of freedom from glasses and myopia control.

How did Finlay get into night lenses?
MUM: Finlay’s eyesight deteriorated significantly when he was 10, so I took him to the optician. It was during our first meeting with the optician that we learned about night lenses. They explained that children who used night lenses had seen successful myopia control results. As a person with myopia myself, I was very eager to prevent Finlay from ending up with a similar prescription (-8).

Did you like wearing glasses, Finlay?
FINLAY: Glasses did improve my vision, but they weren’t very practical for my sports activities like trampolining and biking. They would often fall off when I jumped!

How have you found putting in the lenses?
FINLAY: It took some time to get used to them, but now I can get them in on the first try. I simply sit at my desk, put them in, go to my bed, and sleep.

How much do you enjoy mountain biking, and could you imagine doing it with glasses?
FINLAY: Mountain biking is my favorite sport, and it would be quite awkward with glasses, especially when wearing goggles downhill. But now, with night lenses, I can see clearly without needing glasses!
MUM: There was a time when he wore glasses, and he had to deal with them steaming up, getting muddy or wet, which was quite inconvenient. You couldn’t just wipe off the mud with your mountain bike gloves as it would scratch the glasses. So, overall, glasses weren’t working well for him.

Do night lenses make you feel like you don’t have any vision problems at all?
FINLAY: Yeah! I forget about the night lenses because I only wear them at night. I feel normal, like I don’t need anything to see better.

Have night lenses helped with myopia control?
MUM: Absolutely! Finlay has been using night lenses for 2 years now. At his first annual review, his eyesight had actually improved! Recently, at his second review, his eyesight remained stable. It’s surprising because he used to experience constant deterioration, so it’s wonderful to see his eyesight stabilizing.

What advice would you give to other parents about night lenses?
MUM: I would tell them that night lenses are a game-changer. They are a great investment in your child’s eyesight. It has made Finlay’s life much easier, especially in sports and hobbies, as he can engage in them without the hassle or worries of wearing glasses. The long-term benefit is that there is little to no further deterioration in his eyesight. They are easy to use, and Finlay also gets one night off from wearing them every week.

Did you have concerns about Finlay being able to handle the lenses?
MUM: Because I’ve worn lenses, I didn’t worry about Finlay using them. It was a bit strange to think that he would sleep with them in overnight, as I’ve always been told not to sleep with my daytime lenses. But once you are reassured that it’s not an issue with night lenses, the main thing was teaching Finlay how to put them in and out himself. It wasn’t easy at first, as it takes some time to get used to, but once you adapt, you put them in, wear them overnight, and wake up with perfect vision. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone!

So, Finlay, would you recommend night lenses?
FINLAY: Yeah! They are practical and they work.

For children your age who might be worried about using night lenses, what would you say to them?
FINLAY: Once you get used to night lenses, they are easy!
MUM: It did take some effort for the first few weeks, especially because Finlay has very sensitive eyes. He’s not someone who can just put them in and immediately feel comfortable. But give him a few minutes, and he’s fine as he relaxes into it, realizing that the benefits outweigh any initial hassle. He’s more than glad that he persevered.
FINLAY: …and they are easy to take out, very easy!
